As the health care reform debate continues to heat up during Congress' August recess, Dr. Burgess, Chair of the Health Caucus, hosted two policy forums in North Texas to focus on the ways reform proposals will impact businesses. Joining the congressman was Merrill Matthews, Director of the Council for Affordable Health Insurance and Resident Scholar at the Institute for Policy Innovation, to discuss the parts of health care reform that would affect business, including a tax increase, a new employer mandate, and penalties for non-compliance. We also had representatives from small, medium, and large businesses to provide greater context for the discussion.
Dr. Matthews summarized the overall problems with the bill well when he said, If you're interested in small business, you should be concerned -- very concerned -- about the health care reform proposals we are seeing from Democrats. This may be the biggest corporate tax increase in history. This legislation is making things harder for small businesses, harder for them to complete. This huge new tax increase is not the way to go. It will simply hurt business.Below are the videos of our panelists's remarks.
