This is the wrong kind of reform
Posted by Rep. Michael C. Burgess, M.D. on October 29, 2009
The House Democratic leadership released its latest version of health care reform legislation today, which you can read here.

Americans from all walks of life have a story to tell about the difficulties a tough medical diagnoses has brought on, or their struggles with paying medical bills.  I do not deny that reforms are needed, but Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats have simply put forth the wrong kind of reform.

You don’t make insurance more affordable by making it more expensive.  Families will not benefit from higher taxes.  Struggling small businesses will find it more difficult to afford employer-sponsored health insurance for their employees with new federal mandates and costly penalties for non-compliance.  Seniors who have paid into the Medicare system for decades will see their benefits decrease.  This is not health care reform.

Despite the monstrous size of the bill, the Democrats’ health care plan continues to leave out huge aspects of health care reform.  Medicare doctors are facing a 20 percent cut in payments, yet nothing in today’s announced plan addresses this issue.  Medical liability reform, which has greatly improved access to health care and lowered costs in Texas, is completely missing.

Furthermore, the process leading up to today in the House of Representatives has been the most secretive and opaque since I was elected to Congress in 2002.  House Republicans, including the thirteen of us who are medical professionals, were denied the opportunity to participate in the legislative process from the beginning, despite our continued efforts to provide real ideas for meaningful reform based on our years of experience.  Democrats have completely ignored the millions of Americans who voiced their strong opposition to a government takeover of America’s health care system by pushing ahead with a ‘public option’ and a drastic expansion of Medicaid.

I will continue my efforts to help enact pro-patient reforms to America’s health care system that will increase choice and access to health insurance and health care, lower costs, encourage patient involvement, and ensure that the world’s best health care system remains intact.  House Republicans, including myself, have introduced no fewer than 100 bills that would accomplish these goals, fixing what is broken in our health care system without allowing the federal government to completely take over.  I look forward to reading all 1,990 pages of this bill over the next few days and doing the work North Texans sent me to Washington to do.  I will continue to fight on behalf of responsible health care solutions Americans support.

I find it hard to believe that so many people would vote for something that, you say, will cut Medicare and Medicare payments to doctors. Also that the expense would put others out of business. I do not believe that is the plan for our Health Care Program being considered in Congress. I also do not believe that our President would sign such a bill if presented to him. Perhaps we are reading more into some of the issues than is really there and worrying about things that are misread or misunderstood. I would certainly like a clearer picture from ALL AMERICANS who we voted to be our voices, The Republicans , The Democrats, The Independents.. All American Citizens who are running the House of Representatives and the Senate. Lets forget PARTY Afflliation and just be Americans, who are interested in what is best for America and its citizens. I am so sick of our phony representatives who make up or just lie about issues. Also the Russ Limbaughs and Beck's and O'Reilly's who just spout meanness and confusion. What does the bill really say, I want to read the entire 2000 pages, it's not difficult and our representatives should have ample time to do so and stop appearing before cameras complaining before they have even read the submitted material. Get to work, that is what you were elected to do and represent ALL U.S. Citizens with correct information, not political nonsense. Thank you for letting me just be an American and wish all our Elected Officials would do the same.

Right on, Trish. The extreme partisanship now rampant in Washington is really hurting the ability to get needed change implemented. Rep Burgess, and all other law makers, needs to have input to the process of health care reform. I think he's correct about needing medical liability reform, and raises good objections to the proposed changes to Medicare. I don't see his proposals, though. Did I miss a link on the page?

Hi Tish: Did you READ that bill? I did HR3200 and it is written in such a deceptive way it can be interpreted ANY way the government WANTS to interpret it. Go to cpusa.org and read it. We have a LOT of socialist/communist/marxist in Congress and they HATE our capitalist system and this is just one more way of bankruting the free medical providers. They want CONTROL of everything - business, our lives, etc. We MUST stop them. Also go to your search engine and pull up 45 Long Term Communist Goals for America and READ them and you will see how many have already been fulfilled. Also, if you want to REALLY find out what is happening in this nation and how Obama is trying to destroy our system here, listen to Glenn Beck at 4PM on Fox news. He is telling the American people the unvarnished truth but we have to MANY BLIND Americans they refuse to SEE. Also, if you want to see what Obama's ideologies really are, look at the people he surrounds himself with - Marxist/Communist/Socialist. My mother told me many times "Birds of a feather flock together" and you KNOW a person by the company he keeps.

"Medical liability reform, which has greatly improved access to health care and lowered costs in Texas, is completely missing." Did you write that sentence with a straight face, Dr. Burgess? Perhaps you are unaware that Texas has the highest percentage of uninsured residents in the country, at approximately 25%. That is NOT a statistic to be proud of. Obviously medical liability reform is not the one and only, miracle-cure answer to our current health care crisis. The bill that was passed by the House is not perfect. And yes, it is nearly 2000 pages long. But hello ... that's because it includes more than one idea.
